Quite a lot of time has passed since I added a painting to my website. I’ve been very busy with a big book project that I started after I returned from Paris in November. I have finished the mock-up and will publish it soon.
Working with photography has given me a certain freedom to experiment with the level of light of my subject. Since I am painting cityscapes, I can achieve an interesting effect from the photographs taken at dawn and at dusk. This lead me to try to paint en plein air under the same conditions.
The other new element is the blank canvas. I did a series of paintings called ‘Page Paintings’ which were inspired by graphic novels that I have seen. I tried to combine the idea of painting in the most traditional sense of the word with the layout of a page in a graphic novel. The result was a sort of framing with the white-space of the canvas.
Now I am executing some work that leaves some of the page white in the middle of the painting. I like that idea the the viewer is forced to reconcile the rendering of the three-dimensional illusion with the two-dimensional picture plane. I also like the graphic element which is like a ‘mask’ which alludes to craftsmanship.
