I’ve been thinking a lot about drawing lately. I mean the act of drawing and what happens when you try to express yourself in this way. You are left with very little to play with: paper and the tool that makes a mark. You might be able to make some kind of analogy between drawing, praying and poetry. All of these activities require a sort of intimate interior communication. They are looking for something essential.
The interesting thing about drawing is how immediately the mark communicates. When I am drawing, I can find myself either discovering the form of the object in a myriad of lines or concentrating on a singular isolated stroke that impels me to reveal the form simultaneously with the action of moving the tool across the paper. In either case, the action is quick and the decisions are instantaneous.
What I like about drawing is the truth that it tries to capture. For me, this means that I don’t think about an idea. In the act of drawing, I free myself to what I am able to do. It is effortless. It’s not necessary for me to work a long time on a drawing since I don’t make a distinction between drawing and sketching.
