I am trying to paint from a larger format while maintaining the limitations of en plein air painting. Those limitations are working within a certain time limit and not returning to the same place to ‘finish’ the painting.
The time limits allows me maximum opportunity to study the effects of light on nature. I say maximum even though this time limit is completely arbitrary. I allow myself from 2 to 3 hours. In the third hour of painting, the sun has moved substantially and the quality of light and shadow becomes different than the first hour. Since I am working outdoors and not from a photograph, my main concern is not the documentation of the place but of the effects of sunlight on the objects in my view.
I do not include the process of returning to the same place and picking up the painting from a previous session for a similar reason. The atmospheric conditions of two hours in one day are usually quite different from any other given day. For me, I see the painting experience as unique and un-replaceable. It forces me to concentrate intensely on that particular experience.

I do a lot of work on location, for the last several years on the streets of Paris. I hope to return to Rome in the Spring of 2015 for at least a week of painting/ drawing.
Your work is wonderful, fresh, and yes, alive with light. – Bruce
Thanks Bruce! I love painting in Paris. Hope to see you in Rome.
