What is the difference between the heart of the Eternal City and its periferic residential areas? Well when I moved out of the city to live in a cheaper area outside of the centre, I climbed to the roof of the building and painted the view while the sun was setting. It was an overcast November day and there wasn’t a particularly inspirational light.
In fact, I looked at the painting and saw depression. I thought to myself that I could be in any other city in the world: large ugly block flats with plenty of antennae, few trees and unremarkable streets crowded with every kind of shop imaginable. The word dismal comes to mind.
However, I live in this area and not only find that the light can be every bit as inspiring as the centre of the city with its glorious squares and antique abodes and palaces. The light of the day is the same wherever you go; and that doesn’t have to be depressing. Indeed, the idea can be uplifting. All depends on your state of mind.
