I’ve recently finished a big project involving a video, a graphic novel, and an installation. Some parts are still to be actualized. Along with all of this business, the weather has been somewhat miserable: rain, grey skies and cold temperatures. So painting outside has been put on a back burner.
But Sunday, the sun came out and gave a glorious light to the rarefied air which reflected on the river and surrounding buildings. It was just too nice NOT to go out and paint.
I’m working on a larger scale and I hadn’t realized the complications involved. My performance was comical.
Firstly, the easel fell and completely dumped all of the contents onto the pavement due to an unfastened leg. Then, the large canvas didn’t allow me to see all of the view from one side so I was pitching myself to the left, then to the right of canvas in order to see. As I was moving rapidly, I was also unaware that I was stretching over the palette which was resting on the drawer of the easel in front of me. Doing this, I was rubbing my pants and coat against the paint blobs that were lying near the edge of the palette. When I finally stepped back, I noticed I was completely covered with reds, yellows and oranges!
I also miscalculated the quantity of turps needed to carry out a large dimension piece and in the end was painting without it. What a mess.
