Sunday afternoon. I prepare everything to paint in the centre. It’s a beautiful sunny day although the temperature is chilly. I know where I want to go and immediately find parking. There are a lot of tourists wandering around but I am able to carry my equipment down the steps to the embankment of the Tibur near the Tiburina island.
I realize the differences between painting at sunrise and painting at sunset. The light evolves from high-contrast to low-contrast in about 30 to 45 minutes in the former while in the latter the light goes from low-contrast to high in about 15 minutes. At least this is the case in Rome in the late-winter to early-spring.
The energy in the morning is mysterious and muffled before the sun rise. After, the energy becomes glorious and uplifting. In the afternoon, there is a moment at sunset that is mesmerizing and unreal but soon after drives me almost to depression. Maybe it’s my age.
